Here’s how to make an inexpensive yet luxurious and effective foot scrub at home.

  1. Put a good slosh of olive oil in a saucer or small tea cup or bowl
  2. Add a few drops of tea tree essential oil (optional)
  3. Add a few teaspoons of granulated sugar to the oil mix until you reach a the thicker consistency of a lotion
  4. Rub it around your palms and finger tips

Avoiding any cuts or fissures, gently scrub your feet with the mixture using a circular motion:

  • The granular sugar will exfoliate your feet (that is, slough off the dead skin)
  • The olive oil will soften and moisturise your skin
  • The tea tree can help clear up* or ward off any incipient infections (it is antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial)

*But if you have any infection that hasn’t cleared up after a day or a wound that’s not healing (even if it’s a small one), please see your GP or foot care practitioner.

  • Poor blood flow to the legs (eg, if you have peripheral vascular disease or PVD)

Are you hiding a cancer under your socks? Sat, 03 Nov 2012 11:22:14 +0000 Foot Care Directory Share

Feet are one of the most neglected areas of the body. Most of us ignore them unless they cause us problems, or we are showcasing them in open toed sandals or shoes, so cancers of the foot and ankle are often missed or diagnosed too late.

According to the National Cancer Institute, researchers have shown that atypical moles are more likely than ordinary moles to develop into a type of skin cancer called melanoma.

Moles should be checked regularly by a doctor or nurse specialist, especially if they look complex; grow larger; or change in colour, or shape; or if any changes occur, such as itching, flaking or oozing.

Red wine helps keep elderly on their feet Wed, 31 Oct 2012 08:57:10 +0000 Foot Care Directory Share

Mmm, the title of the article in The Telegraph is slightly misleading, so don’t get too excited! But it’s all about the resveratrol in red wine. More resveratrol = better… BUT quaff too much wine to get at the resveratol and you’ll more likely end up breaking your ankle or leg…
